Satoshi to BTC Converter
Easily convert between Bitcoin, Satoshis (sats), and Fiat currency in real-time.
Fiat Value
A satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin — one hundred millionth of a coin, named after its pseudonymous creator. As Bitcoin's price has climbed, sats have become the practical way to talk about small amounts. This converter moves between BTC, satoshis, and fiat instantly.
Understanding satoshis
Bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places. The smallest possible amount — 0.00000001 BTC — is one satoshi. There are 100,000,000 sats in a single Bitcoin. This exists for a practical reason. When Bitcoin trades at $60,000, saying '0.00035 BTC' is awkward. Saying '35,000 sats' is not. As adoption grows, sats have quietly become the everyday unit — the way you say 'cents' rather than 'hundredths of a dollar'. The Lightning Network pushes this further with millisatoshis — thousandths of a sat — enabling payments too small for the base layer to handle economically.
The formula
1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshis
Sats = BTC × 100,000,000
BTC = Sats ÷ 100,000,000
USD = Sats × (BTC Price ÷ 100,000,000)
Example at $60,000/BTC:
1 sat = $0.0006
100k sats = $60A useful shortcut: at $100,000 per Bitcoin, 1,000 sats equals exactly $1. Many people use that as a mental anchor for quick estimates.
Working with sats
- 1'Stacking sats' is the community term for accumulating Bitcoin in small amounts over time, rather than trying to buy a whole coin at once. There are only 21 million Bitcoin but 2.1 quadrillion sats.
- 2Lightning Network fees are quoted in sats and are typically 1–10 sats per payment — fractions of a cent. This is why Lightning works for micropayments that would be absurd on-chain.
- 3Bitcoin's 8-decimal limit is a protocol rule, not a technical constraint. It cannot be subdivided further on the base layer, regardless of price.
- 4When sending Bitcoin, transaction fees are quoted in sats per virtual byte (sat/vB), not sats total. A typical transaction is around 140 vB — so 10 sat/vB means roughly 1,400 sats in fees.
- 5Some wallets let you switch the display unit to sats. If small BTC amounts confuse you, that single setting change makes everything more readable.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it called a satoshi?
After Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin who published the whitepaper in 2008 and disappeared in 2011. The unit name was adopted by the community rather than defined in the original protocol.
Can I buy just a few satoshis?
Yes. You never need to buy a whole Bitcoin. Most exchanges let you buy any amount, often from a few dollars up. Buying $10 of Bitcoin means buying roughly 16,000 sats at $60,000 per coin.
Is a satoshi the smallest unit possible?
On the Bitcoin base layer, yes. On the Lightning Network, payments can be denominated in millisatoshis — one thousandth of a sat — though these are settled in whole sats when channels close.
How many satoshis exist in total?
21 million Bitcoin × 100 million sats each = 2.1 quadrillion satoshis. That is the hard cap. Some are permanently lost to forgotten keys, so the practical supply is meaningfully lower.
Do I need to enter the Bitcoin price manually?
You can enter any price you like to see what your sats would be worth at that level — useful for planning. For the current value, use the live market price at the time you are calculating.
